Everyone knows what the first and second oldest professions are in the world. However, most people don’t know that the third oldest is distribution.
Until the mid 1990’s, even with the rise of independent music labels and organizations, distribution of music was controlled by less than a dozen media conglomerates. This was accomplished either by direct ownership of distributors or indirect control, through their ownership of product and the way artists were, essentially, enslaved to the record labels and distributors.
All this changed with the explosion of the internet and its opening up the doors to the free exchange of information and ideas. Independent music finally had a way to effectively share information, efficiently organize, and get the word out about their music.
Everything seemed to change overnight. But did it?
The basic answer is no. Distribution is still largely controlled by large multinational corporations that aren’t much interested in anything that won’t sell at least 25,000 copies. The bottom line is the bottom line and the third oldest profession is alive and well.
What has changed is the sudden explosion of companies promising their customers guaranteed distribution. The most common are those that claim if you give them your project they will get you “priority service” at an on-line retailer (which means companies such as Amazon.com and CD Baby are NOT distributors). This “priority service” is empty marketing hype because you can secure on your own the same level of service directly from Amazon.com Advantage and CD Baby. It’s simple and we can show you how!
